Did you know that researchers created the first synthetic cell? Scientists believe that these microbes can be used to create biofuels and vaccines. Click here to read more.
Its very interesting how he is trying to make artiicial cells, but I don't really see see what he can accomplish even if he succeeds. Is he going to try to make a simple organism, or what?
Wow! That is really exciting! My opinion on these microbes: This is a great discovery for the world of medicine! We would find cures for many diseases! But, with every positive, there is a negative. What is these synthesized cells became a huge bacterial virus, that had powers beyond our control? The article had said the cells where self reproducing, meaning if a bacteria was created, it would spread faster than anything has before! I think scientists should do more tests before trying this cell out on a human. The best specimen would probably be (I'm sorry to say) mice. They have the most similar inner features to humans. If the mice in the experimental group die, they must NOT try it again without alternation. If given to a human, the disease might spread. Thank you Leslie for posting this very interesting article!
cool. i wonder how the world would be without scientists and humans. would it be a better place even without medicine and stuff? (we're the ones destroying the earth)
This is really cool, but I'm pretty sure once this is actually used someone is going to find some way to abuse it. You could use it for bad things and make horrible mutations.
i agree with karen. This is really cool but whenever something good is found or invented someone usually greedy will find some way to alter this for more money for them.
Anyways the microbes are really a great discovery for humans. it;s possible that many diseases would have some cure/ vaccination to them!!
whoh! That is so weird! I agree with Karen. I mean, we can clone, but pretty soon scientists are going to be creating their own type of organisms with whatever kind of DNA they want, not real. I mean, they could create some sort of marshan alien or something. Our ideas of ethical might change in 300 years... That would be really horrifying.
wow. as everyone already said (coughcough), these new microbes may be harmful. i mean, if we made something living from stuff thats not living, it will probably become something bad for us or nature. humans are already destroying mother earth!!! but still, these microbes may lead scientists and our minds to a newer, more efficient world! ;) thanks leslie! really interesting to know that.
That article is so interseting. It is amazing what we can do now with our technology. Probably 50 years ago people wouldn't even dream of something like this. Although this stuff is amazing it is also scary to think about what people might use this new discovery for.
I think that although the microbes are going to help in the medical world they take a lot of time and effort to produce. It will most likely not affordable for the average person therefore all the technology would have gone to waste...But still this is pretty cool.
wow, this is awesome, thanks for posting it leslie I remember I was watching a show called Dr who and they did something like this but the show was fiction :)
I have to agree with Karen. With this technology, anyone could practically take over the world (after they discover hove to synthesize more advanced organisms)

I think that it's really cool that scientists are able to actually make DNA and then make it into organisms such as bacteria!

What if scientists figured out a way to have synthetic cells born into a person... then there might not be a need for vaccines.

I saw, about a week ago, a documentary on the Discovery Channel all about it.
ReplyDeleteVery, very revolutionary.

I bet in like 30 years, there will be new organisms created by scientists. Also, thats a really good way to synthesize energy, as in biofuels.
