Click here to view an animation representing the thermal pollution of a river by a power station. Cold water is pumped from the river and hot water pumped back into the river.
it was a simple animation, but also helpful. thanks leslie! also, i started on my photoessay on air pollution--but i told you i would do water pollution. can you change my topic? thanks so much leslie(again)!!
I never knew there were so many kinds of pollution, I can't decide which one is the worst! Thermal pollution destroys aquatic habitats, but other human activities affect the environment in an equally horrible way.
peter: The organisms living in the body of water are used to living in a certain temperature of water. Their body is set to function in a specific temp. So if the water temp. is screwed up by the factory, it affects the organisms.
Shahriyar: They use a LOT of water. It's so much that they would probably have to buy a tank to put it in while it cools. And water can hold in heat very well. That's why when you're on the beach it's cold in June but nice and cold in September. It takes that long for it to cool. But I do agree with you.
Justin: Like before, it costs too much and would take a lot of time.
Before I read this article I only really understood the concept of the ozone; protecting the earth from harmfull UV rays. I didn't know that ozone was formed by actual chemicals. It was very interesting to find out more on such an important issue.
i still dont get what temperature has to do with it
ReplyDeletei love these animations
ReplyDeleteThat really stinks!
ReplyDeleteThat animation was REALLY short. But, it gave me a good basic understanding of thermal pollution.
ReplyDeleteSo whats the main source of the ozone layer getting distroyed?

the animations u post are really helpful. im more of a visual person. =)

Now I understand it alot better. But thats still not good!

Awesome animation!
ReplyDeleteits cool how scientists figure this all out
ReplyDeleteit was a simple animation, but also helpful. thanks leslie!

this was the cool animation we saw in class!

short animation, but very easy to understand.

Dan: the heat affacts how much dissolved oxygen is in the water. w/o the oxygen, the fish and other stuff die.

this was a short video/animation,
ReplyDeletebut it helped me understand what thermal
pollution was

Does the hot water effect species that live in the water?

Is it really that hard to wait for the water to cool down before letting it back into the main water source.

this really helped me thx!
ReplyDeleteThank you Leslie! For putting up animations all the time :]
ReplyDeleteHi Leslie,
ReplyDeleteI would bring the water to an underground tank where it could be cooled and filtered before being returned to the river.

ReplyDeleteThat's a cool picture, but sad at the same time
ReplyDeleteIts scary how warm water can destroy an ecosystem

haha really short..but i understood.
ReplyDeletethts terrible but I don't know what we could do as an alternative!!
any ideas??
It was a short video. I was kind of expecting a narration but I guess there wasn't much to narrate.

that's pretty sad that they would just dump warm water back... they don't even care what the outside effects are.
ReplyDeletethis is soo sad.
ReplyDeletehow can they just do that?
The website link you posted was really helpfull to me since I did my photo essay on ozone layer depletion. Thanks so much for posting it :)

Oops: My last 2 comments were supposed to be on the ozone layer tab.

thats so sad!
ReplyDeletei never fully understod this but the animations really helped!

But wait, what's the problem? Is it that greenhouse gases are going into the ocean? Or that it's heating it?

shouldnt it be illegal for companys to do this. alexg 7i
