Click here to view an animation representing the thermal pollution of a river by a power station. Cold water is pumped from the river and hot water pumped back into the river.

  11. Dan: the heat affacts how much dissolved oxygen is in the water. w/o the oxygen, the fish and other stuff die.

  13. I never knew there were so many kinds of pollution, I can't decide which one is the worst!
Thermal pollution destroys aquatic habitats, but other human activities affect the environment in an equally horrible way.

  14. Does the hot water effect species that live in the water?

  15. Is it really that hard to wait for the water to cool down before letting it back into the main water source.

  17. Thank you Leslie! For putting up animations all the time :]

  18. Hi Leslie,

I would bring the water to an underground tank where it could be cooled and filtered before being returned to the river.

  19. peter: The organisms living in the body of water are used to living in a certain temperature of water. Their body is set to function in a specific temp. So if the water temp. is screwed up by the factory, it affects the organisms.

  23. It was a short video. I was kind of expecting a narration but I guess there wasn't much to narrate.

  24. Shahriyar: They use a LOT of water. It's so much that they would probably have to buy a tank to put it in while it cools. And water can hold in heat very well. That's why when you're on the beach it's cold in June but nice and cold in September. It takes that long for it to cool. But I do agree with you.

Justin: Like before, it costs too much and would take a lot of time.

  26. that's pretty sad that they would just dump warm water back... they don't even care what the outside effects are.

  27. this is soo sad.
how can they just do that?

  29. Before I read this article I only really understood the concept of the ozone; protecting the earth from harmfull UV rays. I didn't know that ozone was formed by actual chemicals. It was very interesting to find out more on such an important issue.

  32. But wait, what's the problem? Is it that greenhouse gases are going into the ocean? Or that it's heating it?
