Saturn moon's methane mystifies experts

Click here to read an article about the abundance of methane gas on the surface of Titan. Was this gas produced by living organisms?

  1. WOW! That is so interesting. I wonder if life with ever show up on Titan. Maybe eventually the amounts of the elements will be correct and Titan will be able to sustain life.

  2. So it contains every thing needed for life but they have not found life on it yet that is pretty cool.

  3. Dang! When I heard about this, I thought it would be from living organisms, and I was really excited! But then, I realized that it was from a geological process, and my hopes got down.

  4. Cool I learned that Saturn's moon's name is Titan and wow i mean like we could potentially live there...

  5. Hi Leslie,

It's interesting how the first moon we explored was our own and then instead of moving on to Mars moons, we go explore Saturn moons. Also, I really wonder what the methane gas is coming from. Who knows, it could be anything.

  6. oh~~
    that sounds awesome!!
I was kinda hoping that the reason the gases were there was because of another living species. :/
oh well. maybe sometime soon, there will be living species.

  7. Wow. How did so much methane get there?

  8. How do they know this stuff.

    Ps Wats methane

  10. I don't understand why all other planet's moons have names, and the Earth's is just "moon".
Bu this was interesting, how there is a possibility of life, but no life...

  11. Other stuff from popsci.com :

Something is consuming hydrogen and organic molecules on Saturn's moon Titan, and the recipe matches astrobiologists' theories about possible methane-based life. Granted, there may be other chemical explanations -- it's just that no one knows what they are yet.

New data from the Cassini spacecraft show hydrogen is disappearing near Titan's surface. What's more, scientists have not been able to find acetylene, an organic molecule that should be pretty abundant in the moon's thick atmosphere.

All this fits very nicely with a theory from NASA astrobiologist Chris McKay, who proposed five years ago that microbial life on Titan could breathe hydrogen and eat acetylene, producing methane as a result.

  12. This is really interesting, it is kind of like humans are getting closer and closer to discovering some great secret about the universe and life...
First Mars shows signs of water, and then Titan has the right substances needed for life!

  13. That was really cool! It's like there's a possibility that in billions of years from now there can be actual LIVING organisms on Titan!!

And I had this cool article about Pluto about 1-2 months ago from the New York Times and I was wondering if you (Leslie) read it...

  15. This is quite interesting. And I have to agree with Justin. Why didnt they go look at Mars's moons? I mean its closer. But then they went farther to explore Titan.

The thought of living organisms on Saturn scares me. ......

  16. So if Earth gets overcrowded, we can move there?

  17. That would be really cool if we could live there soon

  18. Cool! You know, scientists are saying that people can live on the moon or whatever because there's the nessecities but I don't think that will turn out that way if we try to colonize it....

  19. When methane is oxidized it becomes water and carbon dioxide. How can there be water, when there is no carbon dioxide? Also if there is no carbon dioxide wouldn't that mean there is no oxygen?

  20. Wow I think they shud design a ship and go there, and look for living creatures themselfs, I think that in 20 years we might be living there

  21. Wow, if one day there isn't Earth anymore, or Earth as we know it now, maybe Titan will be where the human race will live years from now.

  22. Doesn't methane come from cow fart? Seriously and doesn't it cause pollution too?

  24. WOW!!! This is an amazing descovery....this could mean that life is either on saturn's moon or life could be on the planet! scientist in the future could probally alter the climate so that humans could live there!

  25. Jonathan: That doesn't mean cows live on Titan....
Methane can come from somewhere else too... converting other gases into it....etc.

Alessandro: Methane is a gas. One that can contribute to global warming.

  26. WOW, this is crazy. We are figuring out so much, we really are a dominant species. I can never imagine living on another planet.

  27. Woah!! this is soo cool!
-haha jonathan, i think methane actually does come from cow fart though... but Michaels right. it comes from otherplaces too. and its very harmful.

  28. This is pretty cool. But if we do find life, it would probably be bacteria size which isn't as cool.

  29. Cool. Maybe we can live on Titan (or something like that) in the near future.

  30. It would be cool to live there......

  31. So if earth doesn't have enough resources for us, we can move to Titan?

  32. wow.
so there actually might be life on other planets?
    THATS SO COOL.

  36. omg!!!!!!!!!!! o i know this will probably never happen but wat if earth like was destroyesd and we moved to titan, but i dont think we will be able to...but if titan has all the elements for sustaining life, than why cant ppl live on itttt....?????????????????????????????????????

the moon (our moon) should be caled buz after the astronaut. or bob.. cuz..thts a cool name, =)

  39. I think it's really cool that there is another planet with the same "ingredients" for life. Even though they are not combined in the same way as on earth, it's still very interesting!

  40. I still don't quite understand why if all the life functions are carried out on Saturn's largest moon, it can't contain living organisms.

    Erin A. Flynn 7H

    ReplyDelete
  41. Is the reason why people can't live on Titan because of the abundence of methayne gas? Because if it's not it doesn't make much sense since it's supposed to have all the 'ingredients for life'.

  46. I know right? It could be really good or really bad though...
We could interact and share our knowledge, but we could also start a war with them.

well, we dont have to deal with them now so...
