  1. It kind of seems like BP wasn't actually trying their hardest- it's and OIL SPILL!!!!!! well, maybe they don't care as much about the wildlife...

I think the Gulf of Mexico food web predicament can go 2 ways: Either many species die out due to OIL, or there may be certain populations of the species that have a resistant gene. Kind of like the bacteria with the resistance to antibiotics.

  2. I think that this oil spill will pollute the water which affects the fish. And if no fish are there it will affect there predators and so on.

  3. Wow!
the oil spill was so incredibly huge! My friends parent said that it was and will probably be the biggest oli spill in my lifetime.
I really hope that too many plants and animals don't get hurt, but it seems inevitable :(

  4. i heard about the oil spill but i didn't read about it, this is so bad!!! It's going to pollute the Gulf, kill sea creatures, and make fish posionous to eat. If we don't get rid of the oil it's going to spread not only to Louisiana but a lot of different places as well.

  8. Yeah I have. But Im confused on who is to take the blame. I hear they are blaming BP I think. But then other people are saying something else!

  9. The picture of the oil leaking through the branches in the first link is disgusting...

  10. It's really terrible that the oil spill happened. It really will disrupt the ecosystem of the Gulf of Mexico and kill many organisms.
I really hope that the organisms won't go extinct!

  11. This was a pretty bad situation for the economy and life in the ocean.I know it kills a bunch of animals and this hurts the ecosystem but how does it kill the fish? Is it poisonous to them? Does it suffocate them because it is so thick?

  15. I blame BP and the people who let them drill there. i read an article that said that they didn't have the necessary papers but they were still allowed to drill! BP wont like me for saying this but what if they were the fish? i dont think they would be too happy about swimming in that cruddy stuff....

  18. I'm worried that a lot of sea animals will get wiped out because of all of the oil in the ocean that's going everywhere.

  19. i think this is the result of the lazy bums at bp. they thought something like this would never happen. they were wrong. now the food sorce of so many aquatic animals are at stake because we interfeared too much and too little

  20. It's so sad to see how greed can make other animals and our environment suffer. These people are so selfish! They don't even care about the creatures that live in the ocean. All they care about is their "precious oil". Because of their greed and selfishness, other creatures have to suffer. It's very sad... :/

  21. My dad told me that scientists and experts that are trying to solve this problem know that BP isn't being honest about what really happened the night of the spill and how much of a problem it is.

Here are some amazing pictures of the spill.

  22. I saw the video... That was horrible! But at least BP is trying to stop the gas..
4 BILLION GALLONS!! THAT is a lot of gas!
I was half expecting a boycott of BP gas at the gas station on the way to school from my house.
Thanks Leslie for keeping us updated!

Vincy: I actually found it interesting! See my comment on the post about Synthetic cells on the blog.

  23. I read a current event article recently that said that they found a way to get rid of the oil spill. It had something to do with a mile long tube that sucked the oil away...

  24. this is going to really affect the economy too.
Isn't there some sort of thing where you burn the oil out of the water...?
Its really unfortunate that the thing had to blow up, but aren't there people who watch over these things? Where were they?

  26. a few things to state:
-the fish probably swam away fom the disaster
-the oceans combined are about 200x the size of all the oil

  27. Not sure if you heard, but some celebrity had a device that could split the oil and the water. So they can clean the water, and BP can get back all their oil. Kind of cool, BP is currently testing it. Think it's funny how BP couldn't make it but some celebrity thought of it and put it to action.

  28. For ELA i did a current events on the oil spill. its really bad because the oil gets deeper into the water and takes away oxygen from animals and plants in the ocean. There must of been a lot of oil in the oil rig when it exploded.

  29. hi leslie,
wow, this is a major problem!!!!
how could they lets this company drill a whole in the ocean? i think the food chain will be affected alot by this spil, many species had to evacuate the area, or they would die, many species did die. the oil gets into their blood and cloggs it!!!! this makes me soo mad!!! ahhhhh

    ReplyDelete
  30. The reason that the oil rig exploded was because sometimes there are air bubbles when oil is being drilled, so when the air bubbles come on the boat they couldn't go through where the oil goes through. There isn't a solution to this problem but it is rare so there wasn't a lot of effort put into solving it.
Maybe now, people will realize that one how fragile we make our world, and two that oil drilling isn't always safe.

  31. this is really bad! It's like one of those major evolution things-- the whole food wen will change! And the economy to-- like the tourist industry-- I bet the beaches around there aren't so nice anymore. I wonder if some natural things will fix it, like some bacteria that can eat oil will develop and help get rid of it. I feel so bad for fishermen around there!

  32. My dad recently told me that the pipe is still leaking something like 20,000 barrels per day which is a huge amount! He also told me that they are using chemical dispersants to make the oil break up into bubbles and sink. For their information out of sight is not, or at least should not be out of mind. I can't belive that that is how they are trying to fix the problem. I hope someone thinks of a new way to really fix the problem soon before it does too much damage to the ecosystem.

    ReplyDelete
  33. THEY REALLY NEED TO CLEAN THIS UP FAST! Human activity is ruining the ecosystem!! THEY NEED TO TRY HARDER!
    Those poor animals
    :'(

  34. My brother Aviv told me that this oil spill in the gulf actually spews about 200,000 barrels of oil a day. That will definitely kill many types of organisms, and maybe even pose a threat to humans! (contaminated drinking water, etc...)
